The Stuffed Rabbit Camera Caught What My Parents Did Before Police Entered The Birthday…

The detective’s question stayed in the air longer than the sirens outside.

“Which one of you wants to explain why the camera was covered after she stopped moving?”

My father’s champagne glass hung halfway between the marble island and his mouth. The bubbles kept rising inside it, tiny and bright, like nothing in that room had changed. “She falls,” she said. “Emily has always been dramatic about her.”

My brother David made a sound like someone had stepped on his chest.

“Mom,” he said. “Stop talking.”

The kitchen smelled of champagne, frosting, lilies from the centerpieces, and the metallic cold that came in with the police. Red and blue lights washed across the gold plates. A pink balloon bumped softly against the ceiling vent, over and over, as if the house itself had developed a nervous tic.

Detective Morgan placed the evidence bag on the counter. Inside was my phone, still lit. The motion clip icon sat there, small and ordinary.
